A major controversy has emerged in the Pakistan Super League 2026 clash between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, with Fakhar Zaman at the center of a ball-tampering allegation that could lead to a suspension.
The incident occurred during Karachi Kings’ run chase, where on-field umpires intervened after noticing a potential issue with the condition of the ball. The ball had reportedly passed between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman before being handed back to the umpire by Haris Rauf for inspection.
After a detailed discussion between the umpires, including Faisal Afridi, the officials decided to replace the ball, concluding that its condition had been altered. As per the rules, Karachi Kings were awarded five penalty runs — a decision that significantly impacted the outcome of the match.
Match-Turning Moment
The penalty runs proved crucial in the final over. Karachi Kings’ target was reduced from 14 runs to just 9 off the last six deliveries, making the chase much easier. The game was quickly wrapped up as Abbas Afridi struck consecutive boundaries to seal victory within two balls.
Disciplinary Action Under Review
According to the Pakistan Cricket Board, Fakhar Zaman has been charged with a Level 3 offence under PSL regulations. If found guilty, he could face a ban ranging from one to two matches for a first-time violation this season.
Match referee Roshan Mahanama is expected to conduct a hearing within the next couple of days, where Fakhar will have the opportunity to present his defense.
What the Rules Say
PSL playing conditions allow umpires to inspect the ball at any stage if they suspect any unfair alteration. If tampering is confirmed and responsibility is identified, the batting side is awarded five penalty runs and allowed to choose a replacement ball.
Additional Fine in the Match
In a separate incident, Karachi Kings’ pacer Hasan Ali was fined 10% of his match fee. His celebration after dismissing Haseebullah was deemed inappropriate and in breach of the PSL code of conduct.
This controversy has added another dramatic chapter to PSL 2026, with all eyes now on the referee’s decision, which could impact Lahore Qalandars’ campaign moving forward.
